    Elevate Civil Society!

How democratic is our media society? What influence do economic pressure, quotas or ownership have on the press freedom? How can civil society initiatives use new media, what are the chances and the risks? These and many other questions are the center of Monday´s discourse programme.

A focus on new technologies starts the day: The Elevate Mediachannel is presented as well as the social payment system Flattr and an experts panel on Web 2.0 data mining.

The discussion „Alternative Media & Activism“ at 3pm at Forum Stadtpark will present Anjali Kamat and Iara Lee. There are few concepts in alternative media that have succeeded in being heard and seen worldwide: The daily US news broadcast Democracy Now! is an exceptional example for independent journalism. Democracy Now! points out perspectives which are barely noted by mainstream media, keeps itself politically independent and survives with the help of all kind of donations. A further example for courageous media work is Iara Lee's initiative and the like-named documentary film "Cultures of Resistance". In the respective panel discussion Anjali Kamat and Iara Lee will report on their work and specific production conditions and debate about which forms of reportage and awareness training are possible at the crossroads of journalism and activism.

Following is a panel discussion about the relationship of civil society initiatives and the media in Austria.

Finally, a Livestream broadcasts the conferral of the Big Brother Awards Austria 2010. Every year Privacy International and a growing number of affiliate human rights groups present the Big Brother Awards to government agencies, private companies and individuals who have excelled in the violation of our privacy. Elevate is a project partner of the Big Brother Awards and is responsible for streaming it live in the Elevate Mediachannel.
